5.Plaque of admonition

The Latin text in front of the courtroom door admonishes the councillors to place the community’s interests before their own and to be fair and impartial as judges.

 “In the year 1651, councillor, whoever you are,
when stepping into the Town Hall for your duties,
cast aside all personal feelings before this door:
wrath, injustice, hostility, friendship, flattery;
commit yourself to our society,
because just as you are fair or unfair towards others,
so will you stand and receive before the court of God.”
