2.Justitia – Lady Justice

Justitia or Lady Justice, a female figure with scales in one hand and a sword in the other, became a symbol of justice during the Renaissance.
The scales represent evaluating the facts while the sword represents punishing the guilty.
Justitia symbolised the town council’s right to administer justice and assign punishments.

The stone plaque depicting Justitia (1629) near the entrance to the Town Hall comes from councillor Müller’s domicile on Viru street. The town council brought it into the Town Hall in the 19th century. Beneath Justitia there is the following text in German:
“Justice will prevail and will not suffer suppression, all that is evil must retreat before her.”
